The process of registering a suitable domain can be very testing at times. Many times, it happens that the domain name you are interested in registering has already been registered by someone else. In that case, you may be forced to look for some other appropriate domain name but the situation may become a lot worse if the new domain name you have come up with has already been registered as well. Moreover, many purchasers do not have enough understanding about what an appropriate domain name actually is. As a result, they end up having a domain name that is either unavailable or unsuitable. To provide solutions to such problems, tools like domain name generator (DNG) have specifically been designed.

In simple words, domain name generator can be considered to be a service which lets you choose a good and suitable domain name. A complex yet effective algorithm is used at the back-end of a relatively simple looking domain name generator. Different domain lookup servers are needed to carefully check great number of domain names for availability. The results of most generators have suggestions provided with different top level domains such as .com, .net, .org etc.

Generally, there exist two versions of domain name generator. One relates to the creation of domain names based on the keywords given as input to the generator whereas the second one works as a randomizer and provides domain names by using combinations of random words.

Keyword Domain Name Generator

The domain names suggested by keyword DNG are based on actual words or keywords. You just need to enter keyword as an input to this generator and it will display a list of suggested domain names containing that keyword. Some keyword DNG may require a user to enter more than one keyword and subsequently return domain names containing a combination of those keywords. It is recommended to use a keyword that is most relevant to the purpose of your website.

The names displayed by keyword DNG are often more appealing, related and can be easily remembered. However, the drawback of this generator is that most of the names created have been previously created and hence are unavailable.

Random Domain Name Generator

Unlike keyword DNG, the random domain name generators provide suggestions of domain names based on a mixture of random words. The domains created by this generator are more likely to be available for registration or purchase and most importantly, they are relatively shorter. But they are hard to remember and are often unrelated. Apparently, thousands of domain names are generated by this type of domain name generator.

Using any generator is something that is entirely based on a user’s requirements. Since each generator has its own pros and cons, some people may find keyword domain name generator more suitable and to some, the random DNG may appear more appropriate.

Making your search easy

If you are looking to purchase a domain name, it is likely that you would find the domain name generator tool very helpful. It can save you a lot time and trouble in finding an appropriate domain name. While using a DNG, you must take a number of points into consideration to generate a good and suitable domain name. A proper domain name is indeed very important to justify the purpose of any website and can make you stand out a mile among your competitors. You should choose that type of domain names which is short, can be remembered easily and additionally, can be typed without any problem.

One can get an idea about the significance of a good domain name by the fact that as an investment, good domain name can offer you great profits as well. You may find it interesting to note that numerous domain names have been resold in multi-million dollar deals in recent years or so. For example, the domain “creditcards.com” was reportedly resold for $2.75 million in 2004.

Different websites are embedded with different domain name generators to make it easy for the user to decide a suitable domain name. You can take help from various online DNGs, such as dnfellow.com, to finalize your domain name. Even if the domain name generator does not provide you with the desired results, it may be at least useful enough to give some idea about how you can have a good and unique domain name for your related website.

Getting a right name for your website may be a complicated process, as availability of the names is limited. Even though an absolute majority of one-word domain names have already been taken, number of great names stays unlimited. All you need is creativity, basic knowledge, maybe a helpful search tool.

Follow strategy

First of all, think about the content of your website. What are your plans for the future? What is its purpose, your expectations, the aims you want to achieve? Well, this can be pretty difficult to answer, but make sure you do so, as it is essential before you proceed.

Good way how to name a website is to check the available domain names already before you set up a business. You will find out which names are already taken, so avoid renaming the business in the future. There is a possibility to buy a domain name from its owner however this can be quite expensive.

Found a great domain name that is available? Then act immediately! Do not wait until it is taken by someone else and invest to the proper start of your business today. Price of the domain names is not so high, so it is definitely worth an instant investment.

Carefully consider how many years your domain ownership lasts. It is not uncommon that the owner just forgets to renew the domain name rights and the name is taken the very next day by someone else. It is advisable to buy the domain rights for period of at least five years.

Beat mediocrity

Name is a symbol. It can attract, or distract the potential visitors of your site. It is important to build friendly image of your website. People will remember how they felt when browsing through the site. Ideal name should express that the site is worth the visiting.

Forget about plain, ordinary names including words such as “homepage” “news” “blog”…Be extravagant, creative, imaginative, artistic, absolutely original. Think of any possible word combinations, and pick those which will spark the curiosity in people and led them to take a look at your site. Your website, together with its name, is sort of a business card. If you neglect it, the others will think of you as not very reliable. On the contrary, the well maintained, carefully created site with a catchy, original, witty name will tell the people that you really care about your business.

Don’t be boring. People won’t visit your site if they think it is a waste of time. Give it a name that denotes you are not just one of many others. If your website sounds interesting, people won´t miss a chance to visit it. Also, if the name is easy to remember, visitors will be more likely to come back in the future, same as they can possibly recommend the site to the other people. Be catchy. Good idea how to name website is to give it funny name. We all love humor, jokes and laughter.

Consider following characteristics of the potential name:

Not too long and easy to remember.

Name relevant to the industry.

Does the name appear attractive?

Does it sound well?

Still did not find anything suitable? Then, think of the words which do not exist in any of the languages, and are not meant to represent anything, literally are nonsense. If they are short, sound cheerful and/or positive, contain some vowels, people may well remember these new words. This is the way how many of the popular social network sites, or search engine names were born.

Finally, there are sites which will help you to find the right website name for your business. dnFellow is one of the online applications where you can provide keywords and get help with combining it into the single domain name. Moreover, the application suggests also the exclusive combinations that are still available, not just the nice ones. Site offers various extensions for the domain names, and means a great deal of help in the process.

Are you thinking of the name for your website? Do you face difficulties in finding the right combination, or you are just short of creativity? This article will provide useful information about how to name the website and get the most of it.

Personality of Your Site

Name of your website is a powerful marketing tool that can contribute to the success of your business. It forms the image of your site, and gives an important signal towards the (potential) customers. It can make or break you.

The reason behind power of website names, also names in general, lies in the language and the way it shapes our perceptions of reality. We are more influenced by the emotions as we think. Just consider following examples. Imagine colorful, bright, and positive looking website with short, energizing name. Such website is naturally a pleasure to visit and browse through. It will certainly be more successful as the one which appears a bit neglected, grey, or too dark, moreover its name is long, difficult to remember, or just not interesting at all.

Name can convey a thousand of feelings and attitudes, the same as the painting. Keep this in mind when thinking about how to name website.

Easy to remember, relevant, attractive

Yes, most of the one, also too word website names have already been taken. But this does not mean you should resign on the idea of having the superb site name.

It is good to know what you exactly want from the website. If you are starting a new business, think about what you want to achieve in the horizon of several years. Consider the website goals and pick up the best tools how to reach them. This can make the name selection easier and promises higher chance of success.

If there is a possibility of checking the domain name before deciding on a company name, do so. It is always much easier to do a detailed research in advance, than renaming the business, not mentioning buying the domain name from its original holder, what can be very expensive

Also, if you find the original and suitable name that is available, do not wait until it is taken by someone else. Consider carefully for how long you buy the domain names, it is highly recommended to buy the rights for at least five years. Otherwise it may easily happen that someone else will buy the name in a case you forget, or just fail to renew the rights. Longer period of ownership is beneficial for search engines, as well. Time is important.

Plan B

An ideal scenario of how to name a website would look like this:

You are lucky and found available, catchy and perfectly fitting name

Your business has an unconventional name which denotes something that in reality exists (e.g. literary character, food ingredient, etc) but it is so marginal that the domain is still available

However, this almost never happens.

Therefore you need to think more, maybe to discuss the issue with couple of friends to find an inspiration.

If you failed to find relevant word combination, try to come up with a catchy phrase that is not too long (e.g. Future is now – for the coach services business). Don´t forget the name should be as easily to remember as possible.

Think of original combination of words (violet frog). This can be useful especially in the art business as the average visitor of such sites will appreciate these metaphors, or symbolical meaning.

Very helpful tool how to name website is to use my specialized site dnFellow. It provides an online application which will help you to find a great domain name. It reflects on the fact that practically all one-word domains have already been taken. Therefore it aims to check the availability of word combination names. Site is often described by the users as a must-have tool for every serious domainer. It would be a mistake not to give it a try when looking for the right domain name.

Finally, if you do secure and great name, the name itself may become an asset. Together with a well maintained site, the name and the site can become a very valuable asset that can be sold in future as a developed website.

Domain is considered to be an important term as far as the internet concepts are concerned. Even though we come across this feature on internet almost all the time but not many of us would know the precise answer to the question “What is a domain?”

Basically, domain or domain name refers to a part of web addresses such as websites and email addresses. For instance, for the address www.google.com, domain name is “google.com”. Moreover, it represents the part which comes after “@” sign in an email address. Considered to be a website’s descriptor, domain name’s main purpose is the identification of an IP address associated with any particular website. Domain can exist on internet or on a Local Area Network (LAN). A website name is an alternative word used for the domain name. It would not be wrong to say that a website name is used to identify the address of the website.

Each website or a page on a network has a specific web address, known as Internet Protocol (IP) address. An IP address is basically a string of numbers associated with any particular device on a network. In order to connect to a computer, server or device over a network, you need to know its IP address. For this, a unique domain name is assigned to an IP address or multiple IPs as it is comparatively easy to remember a domain name rather than remembering a complex IP address. Accordingly, a user is supposed to enter only the website address on a web browser for any link instead of entering the complete IP address itself. In fact, it is correct to say that a domain name is a simple, user friendly version of an IP address.

The translation of a domain to an IP address is the job of a “Domain Name System” (DNS), which is a very large database or network of servers. As we enter a domain in a browser, DNS works in the background in a transparent process and provides an IP address for that domain to the browser. The browser then forwards us to the particular website and connects our machine to it.

A domain is generally known to be divided into two parts. The first part of a domain is “second level domain” and in the website address www.google.com, it is “google”. The other part, known as “Top level domain” (TLD), comes immediately after the dot and it is “com” in the given example. Moreover, if the web address is www.google.co.uk, then “.co” represents a larger mid-level domain.

Also known as domain extensions, TLDs are further divided into two main types: generic top-level domains (gTLDs) and country code top-level domains (ccTLD). The generic top level domains include popular domain extensions available on web such as .com, .net, .org, .biz etc. On the other hand, the country code top level domain (ccTLD) is specific for each country. For instance, the United States of America is entitled to “.us” ccTLD. These domains are primarily used by organizations and companies of any country to target local audiences in an effective manner.

It is noteworthy to mention that a domain name should not be confused with a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). URL refers to the complete address used to visit a webpage on a website and typically includes slashes and colons whereas a domain is part of a URL, which is itself a larger web address. As compared to a domain, URL represents more information and detail including specifying folder name, page address etc. A URL can be in this form http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello and it is clear that it represents detailed information in addition to giving the domain name, wikipedia.org. The http part indicates the browser that a domain name is being used instead of an IP address.

The proper way to organize a domain name is to do it from right to left. General descriptors, represented by TLDs, are set to the right whereas specific descriptors, known as second level or mid-level domains, are set to the left. The extreme left part is generally a machine name such as “www”. According to the predefined rules, one can set any name in the second level domain provided that it should be no more than 63 characters in length. Moreover, there are minimum limits on some domain extensions like three characters for .com extension. In addition, the same second level domain can be used with numerous TLDs.

Considering all these facts, it can be concluded that the concept of domain is a very important one in the internet related fields. And, the understanding of domain is an essential prerequisite in comprehending other major related networking concepts.

Domain registrar refers to a commercial company or an entity whose responsibility is to sell generic Top Level Domains (gTLD), country code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) and provide the desired internet website names to clients. You need to contact a registrar in order to purchase a domain name for your website, such as www.hello.com or www.hello.org. Offering domain registry services to the public, a registrar is obliged to follow certain rules and regulations and has to be accredited by Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

ICANN is a private international body whose duties involve governing the distribution of domain names. Created in 1998, ICANN has its head quarter established in Marina Del Rel, California in United States. The work of ICANN generally includes allocation of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses such as IPv4 and Ipv6 to internet registries, assignment of TLDs and management of Domain Name System (DNS). Notably, the duties previously carried out by a number of internet related authorities such as Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, famously known as IANA, are now performed by ICANN.

In past decades, there existed only a limited number of registrars but now, the progress in the field of internet networking has resulted in the emergence of numerous registrars who are offering their services to the public all over the world. In addition to domain name, web hosting and email services are also offered by registrars. Different packages including variable disk space, bandwidth, and emails accounts are available for the clients at different price ranges.

Once the registrar completes the domain registration process, the domain becomes available for access over the internet within few hours or few days of registration. After that, a user just needs to enter the domain name link on the browser and he or she will be connected to the particular website. One can register only those domain names which do not previously exist. This process of checking the requested domain name against the existing domain names in the database of DNS is done before the domain registration.

The price of registering a domain varies from one registrar to another but it is normally around $9-$15. The fixed amount of money is paid for the domain on yearly basis to the respective registrar to continue using a domain name. Sometimes, companies and organizations pay the fee for several years in advance as the overall price becomes quite lesser. The registration period of a domain name is normally one year and it can be renewed either automatically or by contacting the registrar depending upon the package you have opted for. However, if renewal fee is not paid on time, the registrar may shut down all the services for the domain. After the services are shut off, the domain name is listed as unregistered domain and it becomes available for new registration. Anyone can register for that unique domain name and mostly, requests are submitted beforehand to the registrar for the specific domain name in case it gets expired. Moreover, one can upgrade a current domain package to other suitable packages depending upon the requirements. Similarly, a registrar can be changed and domain data and other services like email accounts, can be transferred to any other registrar.

It is important to note that the TLDs sold by the registrars can be either be generic TLDs (.org, .com, .net etc.) or country code TLDs (.US, .PK). The purpose of each gTLD is specifically related to any particular field. For example, .org is used to represent non-profit organizations, .biz for business purposes, .com for general commercial use and so on. However, there is no compulsion on the use of any domain extension for any field. Irrespective of nationality or age, any person can register these domain extensions anywhere in the world. However, some rules and guidelines specific to each country are to be followed to register for country code Top Level domain extensions. Some country domains including .NL, .CC, .TV etc. have been promoted as international domains due to the fact that they appear more appealing to users. This move has been well accepted as it has provided an alternative to the limited number of generic domains.

It is worth mentioning that according to the experts’ advice, a number of factors including website requirements, price range, domain features and the accreditation of registrar should be considered before choosing any specific registrar.

Before creating your unique signpost on the Internet, a domain name, you need to register it to stake a claim to this particular name – for business related, or maybe just personal reasons. Each websites you have ever been to, as well as each email address you have ever registered to has a domain name in its address. Domain is a significant feature of your website.

The domain name consists of the address of your site and can have some of the wide variety of extensions (country codes: .us, .co.uk, .ca or universal shortcuts such as .com, .org, .net, .biz, or .edu)

What Is a Registrar

Domain registration is publicly available via an official registrar. Financial terms, as well as other conditions depend on the individual provider. However, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) supervises the registration process. ICANN also gives the definition of what is a registrar and provides the authorization. Registrars track the records of domain names put into their database and share the information with other registrars to guarantee the uniqueness of domain identities.

The period in which the domain appears online varies from a couple of hours to a few days. Upon the completing, the domain may be marked as „in construction“, which should serve as your placeholder. Once a registrant is prepared to publish the content on website, webhosting should be provided.

ICANN recommend dealing with an accredited registrar who is a party to an official agreement with this institution, thus meets the minimal requirements for what is a registrar. You can find the list of accredited registrars on the ICANN site.

After the successful completion of domain registration, domain becomes yours for the period of contract, usually expressed in the terms of years. If you wish to keep the domain name also further, you must renew the registration before the expiration date. The process is usually not expensive.

Privacy and Legal Aspects

There is an option of keeping the domain name private. This offers the advantage of keeping the information like name, email address, address, etc. hidden from the global Internet database. If you are curious about the purpose of this, try to think about irritating thing called spam. Yes, making your contact details unavailable may contribute to the decreased number of spam, or may serve well those who just want to register the domain name anonymously.

When it comes to the legal terms concerning the ownership right to the domain name, various misconceptions often occur. Some Internet users describe registrant as an „owner“. However, this is legally incorrect and terms as „registrants“, or „domain holders“, are viewed as more exact.

It is important to read terms of the registrar thoroughly before you proceed with registration. Some registrars may offer the wider autonomy in the disposition with domain name, on the contrary to the others, being rather restricting in the domain name usage policy. Making sure to retain the right of transfer to another registrar is well advisable. Always get properly informed about the fees and service offered.

Let Your Domain Dominate

Considering the search engine optimization (SEO) aims, it is highly recommended to register a domain with appropriate keywords. However, there are also other approaches, like choosing the domain name which is easily memorable, short, or simply sounds attractive. Good domain name should not be longer than two to three words and should be readable, of course.

There are no limits for your creativity when thinking of the domain. It is not necessary to create a domain name from the words that really exist in any of the languages, unless you forget about sound of the name. Remember, domain name can be a powerful tool in the Internet world. Finding the right one is about seeking for the balance. It is always wise to discuss the choice with someone else. Devote it some time and energy – domain really is a big part of your brand.

Even though there is a common perception of all the good domains being already taken, don´t give it up. Get creative and try to think of new words, attractive combinations, or just try different extensions.

Domain is undoubtedly the crucial part of identity of your Internet website. It is an absolutely unique feature, since it is impossible to set up twin domains. In this sense, the domain name of your site can be often more unique as your own name!

It is good to understand the power behind the good domain name. Domain is something like storefront – a very helpful tool to attract the traffic you need. Some call it a nickname – as it often sounds friendly and should be as easy to remember as possible. Usually, it is the same as a website name and often denotes the company´s name or motto. A strong marketing value of the domain name is obvious. More than 200 million domain names are estimated to be registered all over the world.

What is a Domain

A domain name is an identification sign, a symbol of autonomy in the Internet. Most often it is the unique address of website. It is also a significant aspect of running your internet business, providing information about the organization, etc. It is simply a link used to attract people to your website. Internet is a vast space, that´s why domain names really make things easier for us.

Various networking contexts, naming problems, and other issues connected with the world of domains are formed by the rules and procedures of the Domain Name System (DNS). DNS denotes sort of international phone number book given to the Internet servers. It is a summary of domain names.

Domain names are written in the conventional direction – right to left (the same as family surnames put to the right and particular person names written to the left). Looking at some of the Internet common domains can help you understand what a domain is. Examples you certainly know include wikipedia.org or harvard.edu.

Registration

Domain name is officially registered with a domain registrar. The first Internet domain name was registered already in 1985 and its name was Symbolics.com (as the company was called Symbolics Inc.)

Domain name registrars are accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Registry is responsible for records put into the database of names registered within its capacity. Each registry also shares the information with other domain name registrars. The whois protocol is a special service used in the process of publishing information about registered domain names. The service is usually paid. Registrant is sometimes incorrectly described as an “owner”. Terms “registrants” or “domain holders” are, however, more appropriate.

Structure

Many people confuse the terms “domain name” and “URL”. To explain it clearly, the domain name is only one component of URL (a Uniform Resource Locator). Internet address must contain the name of domain, same as your home address would not be complete without your name. Whole URL then provides more detailed information, such as folder name, protocol language, specific page address or machine name.

URL: http://www.WhatIsDomain.net/index.html

What is a domain name here? WhatIsDomain

Domains are most often put down as www.WebsiteName.com. In this example you can recognize main parts.

The www part is a part of the main domain, there can also a subdomain (info.Website.Name.com). WebsiteName is the domain name itself.

The .com part is called the extension. There are two main types of domain extensions used after the last dot. These are gTLD (Global Top Level Domain) and ccTLD (Country Code Top Level Domain).

Examples of Global Top Level Domains include:

.com (commercial activities, but the extension is no more limited solely to them and became the most popular domain extension in general)

.net (network domain extension)

.org (organization)

.gov (government)

.edu (educational institutions)

Examples of Country Code Top Level Domains:

.us (the United States)

.de (Deutschland, Germany)

.co.uk (United Kingdom)

If you intent to build a chain of interconnected websites, you can decide for multiple domains. For example, a clothes shop can create the main domain website called WearUsOn.com, with daughter sites ShoesForYou.com, DevilHats.com, ShoeMaster.com, etc. This is system is especially helpful for the SEO purposes, as you can link the pages to each other and create a powerful internet space for your business.

Choosing right website name

Think twice (or even more) when picking up the right domain name. Do not forget it is your online identity, i.e. forms the perceptions Internet users will have about your website. If possible, try to think of an original, short, but also effective name. Keyword to the site´s focus can be essential.

Creativity serves you a lot in the process. It may push you forward to know about some of the simple keyword domain names (Beer.com, Business.com, Diamond.com, Candy.com, Fund.com,…) which were sold for several million dollars. You never know…maybe you will become a millionaire once only because you have found out about the new unique domain name.

Bryan Haine, About.com: Naming your online business can be a pretty tough decision. Sometimes the name is obvious, if you already have an off-line business. For example, Joe’s Office Supplies logically becomes JoesOfficeSupplies.com. But what if you are launching a brand-new business? The domain can affect search engine ranking and ultimately the success of your business.

Some domains seem to have been chosen on a whim. But most take significant thought and time.

I’ve been playing with a pretty cool site called dnFellow.com and I’m impressed. It’s very simple – and it works great.

The idea is this: enter a set of words (or chose from a list of categories) and allow the site to create a list of potential – and available – domain names. You can chose from com, net, org, info, biz, me, us, ca, it and de. It will output a set of options, that you can select from, and then proceed to register the name with one of three primary domain registars.

When setting up a website, you have two choices. You can choose to use a free site such as Blogger or WordPress.com or you can pay for a domain name of your own. So why should you choose a paid domain name instead of a free blog?

There are a few different reasons. Firstly, you have control over your domain name if you register it. You can do what you want with it and nobody can stop you. If you use a free one, it can be shut down for any reason that WordPress, Blogger or Google consider to be a sufficient reason.

If you choose Blogger, your name will be xxxx.blogspot.com and so it’s apparent to everyone that you’re using a free name. It means that your business doesn’t have the same credibility because you didn’t care enough to even spend the small amount to register a proper domain name.

If you use a free site, you have to use their control panel, no matter what problems that presents to you. The free wordpress site allows spammers easy access to post comments and some may be very inappropriate.

When you choose a domain name, it’s the first step towards branding your business. You want the flexibility to choose every aspect of it. That includes the ending. You don’t want to be http://www.mcdonalds.blogspot.com because that’s a very tacky name.

You want to own your name and, if necessary, keep registering it forever so that nobody else can take it away from you. Free sites allow people to register names that are so close in look that it could easily be confused with yours.

Do the smart thing. If you’re setting up a business and need a domain name, invest the time and small amount of money to get the best paid name available for your purpose.
